Unit Title

The Art of Losing

Student Profile

This is a class of mixed-ability students who are passionate about Literature, and who have opted to take Literature as a full O Level subject.

 

While they are interested in the subject, this class lacks confidence in verbalising their opinions as well as analysing poems independently with minimal guidance. Hence, they may not be forthcoming when it comes to speaking up during class.

Level/Stream

Secondary 4 Express / Pure Literature (25 students)

Assumed Prior Knowledge

  • Students should be able to identify and explain the effect of common literary forms and devices

  • Students should be able to write a essay consisting of an introduction, three body paragraphs as well as a conclusion

Teacher Objectives

Develop students’ ability to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of how style contributes to the meaning of texts (LO 1.5)

  • Make meaningful connections between the poems and the self, and between the poems and the world (LO 1.8)

  • Read and critically appreciate poems independently (LO 1.9)

  • Develop personal and critical responses to texts (LO 2.1)

  • Respond to different views and perspectives on the topic of loss (LO 2.3)

Key Skills Taught

Students will learn how to:

  • Analyse various stylistic elements used in portraying experiences of loss

  • Critically examine the complex theme of loss

  • Make independent interpretations of texts

  • Draw connections between texts and their personal experiences

Student Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Critically examine poems with minimal guidance

  • Demonstrate understanding of the complexities of emotions evoked by experiences of loss and subjective realm of grief

  • Engage personally with the text, using and reflecting upon their own knowledge and experiences related to loss
